Philip Seymour Hoffman was an Academy Award-winning actor, considered one of the greatest of his generation. Like many great dreamers: Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Richard Pryor and Billy Holiday, whose sensitive nature shined so bright that their hearts could’ve been light bulbs, Hoffman illustrated and projected the human condition. He exemplified real emotions in imaginary circumstances. His whole body transformed for each role he played over his two decade career.

Hoffman was found dead in a Manhattan apartment on Sunday from an apparent drug overdose. According to Police, and at Hoffman’s own admission, he’s had a history of drug abuse that, for many years, seemed to be behind him. An investigation into his death is underway.

His most recent role was in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, where he plays Plutarch Heavensbee, the head game maker.

Hoffman is survived by his partner Mimi O’Donnell and their three children.
