For the month of July until the end of the month (7/30/2014), PBS is streaming online the documentary American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs by filmmaker Grace Lee (no relation). This documentary premiered recently at San Francisco’s CAAM Film Festival 2014 and is about the life and work of Grace Lee Boggs, a Chinese American philosopher, writer, and activist in Detroit, who along with her husband James Boggs (who was a well known black activist) devoted their lives to fighting for causes of social and economic justice. Though Grace Lee Boggs’ activism was mainly within the black civil rights and black power movement, she served as an inspiration for then young Asian American activists of the 1960s, 1970s and beyond. Grace Lee Boggs is an example of inter-ethnic coalitions being an important foundation to successful activism. Much has change since the 60s and 70s but there’s a whole lot more to be done, and Grace Lee Boggs at the age of 98 is still fighting, writing, and speaking out against social and economic justice. Watch the PBS stream of the documentary below and be inspired.
