“The Strain,” Guillermo del Toro’s new TV series

Mexican director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hell Boy, Blade) is making a TV series about vampires called The Strain. Below the creepy teaser shows a shaky frame with a bunch of rats. Through their spreading a disease, they have something to do with creating the most horrifying of vampires. The show is based on three books written by Toro and Chuck Hogan.

Toro definitely has a thing for blood suckers, but he can flip the concept pretty well. His first attempt was 1993’s Cronos. An old antique dealer, Jesus Gris, discovers an ornate golden beetle hidden in an ancient statue. The beetle embeds itself into Gris and gives him eternal life, but obviously there’s a catch. Gris can’t take daylight and he develops an appetite for human blood. The story is a clever variant on a classic tale. I love his work and Idris Alba too, but Pacific Rim, although well received, was just barely worth sitting through. Fingers crossed for The Strain. Check the Cronos trailer below.
