Narco Cultura (2013) takes a look at the growing popularity in Mexico and U.S. of narco drug cartel influenced music “narco corridos”, narco themed action films, and the devastating effects of the drug war on the other side of the border in Mexico. The documentary’s central subjects are Edgar Quintero a LA based narco corridos singer of the band Buknas de Culiacan, and Richi Soto a crime scene investigator in Mexico. The music of narco corridos sounds like Mexican folk music mixed with gangsta rap lyrics sung in Spanish, often glorifying some narco drug gang or individuals (narcos often pay singers to be their personal bards and entertainers). Narco action films are in the same vein, depicting narco themed story lines, with the occasional cameo from actual narcos. All of this entertainment is a backdrop to the intense and deadly consequences of the failed drug war, affecting civilians, journalists, and law enforcement in Mexico. Warning NSFW images in this documentary.
