Phife Dawg of the legendary Hip-Hop group A Tribe Called Quest just released a new single called “#DearDilla.” A tribute to the legendary Detroit Hip-Hop producer J Dilla, who passed on 8 years ago, February 7th, 2006. Dilla and Phife shared a kindred spirit, in their musicianship, and dealings with health issues. Dilla suffered from a rare blood disease called thrombotic thrombocytopenic pura, and Phife is diabetic (he calls himself the “the funky diabetic” in ATCQ’s “Oh My God”). Phife reminisced about interactions …
The super duo Step Brothers (Alchemist and Evidence) just released their debut album Lord Steppington, a project that’s been in the making since 2008. Alchemist and Evidence have worked together in the past on various projects, including Evidence’s solo material, and with Evidence’s group Dilated Peoples. The name of the album Lord Steppington comes from a lyric in Alchemist’s other project with rapper/producer Oh No called Gangrene in the track “Dark Shades” from Vodka and Ayahuasca (2012). Lord Steppington is produced by the Step Brother …
Prince Po is out the gate next month (February 4th) with his latest solo album Animal Serum (Wandering Worx & Green Streets Entertainment), produced by west coast rapper and producer Oh No. For those that don’t know, Po was Pharoahe Monch’s partner-in-crime when they were the pioneering duo Organized Konfusion. The futuristic music they made in the 80’s and 90’s remains relevant and groundbreaking to this day. Po’s solo albums, particularly The Slickness (2004), was a personal favorite. On “Bump …
The UK’s Garage House DJs/production duo Disclosure just released a new video off their 2013 debut album Settle called “Grab Her”. The video is a play on the movie Office Space and the TV show The Office, with a lot of surreal, and absurd visuals. Supposedly there is a J Dilla sample, the vocal snippet possibly from Slum Village’s “The Look of Love” off Fan-Tas-Tic (Vol. 1) . Can you hear it? The duo often credits J Dilla as inspiration for their production. They did a mix …
